So... your child is currently receiving services like Speech, Occupational, Developmental, or Physical therapies through Early Intervention, what are the next steps for you to take?
I must acknowledge that the process of getting my child diagnosed was quicker than what I typically observe. This was partly due to luck and partly due to my active involvement in my child's therapies, as well as staying in communication with all therapists and coordinators during the entire process.
After our pediatrician submitted our paperwork, we were contacted by one of the top coordinators in my area. She was spot-on with everything, frequently checking in on our progress and promptly addressing any concerns we had. She connected us with excellent therapists and made changes when needed. We are truly fortunate.
This is where my journey began. I understand that not everyone can do what I did, so please don't misinterpret my words. I actively participated in 99% of each therapy session. I asked questions and looked up unfamiliar words and activities discussed during the sessions. I made sure to follow up with the therapist whenever I needed clarification. We made use of every tool and resource they provided, including an indoor sensory swing, a compression vest, and an AAC device, along with other smaller items that I can't recall at the moment. We promptly added our child to the autism evaluation list as soon as we enrolled in Early Intervention, knowing that the waiting list would be lengthy.
I took advantage of every opportunity available because I understood that by the time evaluation time arrived, we would have explored all options. It is essential for my autistic child to receive a diagnosis. I would like to clarify this point. It's not that I wish for my child to be autistic, but as parents, WE KNOW! Therefore, when a doctor informs us that nothing is wrong with our child despite our certainty, it can be exasperating, as a diagnosis can lead to access to additional resources.
After 2 years in therapy I was finally alerted that we had reached the top of the list for evaluation.
